Bonjour! Since we touched on cognacs yesterday, le Bonjour! Since we touched on cognacs yesterday, let's do a wee session on armagnac. The Armagnac region in France is not too far away from Cognac, and it is defined by the two main armagnac producing regions, Bas and Ténarèze. Most armagnac producers are small and use the word Château to indicate a small individual producer. Armagnac uses similar labelling terms as cognacs, but the minimum ageing requirements are slightly different. They also have 2 distinctive differences - vintage and blanche. For armagnac, the minimum years for an XO is 6 years and they have Hors d'Age and vintages at 10 years and above. A note about vintage armagnac - it is similar to single cask whiskies. Vintage armagnacs are made with spirits from grapes that were all harvested in the same year. So a 1995 vintage would means that the spirit was made from grapes harvested in 1995 only. A special group of armagnac is the blanche. This is a spirit that has not been matured in oak. Folle Blanche is a grape variety well suited to use for Blanche Armagnac as it produces spirits with pronounced fruity and floral aromas.
